Gabion is a French word that means a large net or cage. Installed gabions look like large baskets filled with stones.
Modern gabions are a three-dimensional cellular structure, similar in appearance to a container. For their production they use a sturdy steel wire or metal bars, due to which the finished constructions are characterized by resistance to different kinds of influences, as well as by the even weight distribution among all the elements. The only enemy of quality metal – moisture, because of which the material oxidizes and rusts. To avoid it, gabions are made of zinc-coated steel or treated with polymers.
The gabion’s inner part is filled in with different solid and solid materials: natural stones, rubble, broken or whole brick, boulders, sea and river pellets.
Gabions are actively used in different spheres, since the constructions have many advantages:
– high strength;
– resistance to rupture;
– even distribution of the impact loads on all elements;
– environmental friendliness and safety for humans;
– air permeability;
– water permeability;
– filtering characteristics;
– easy installation that does not require the use of special equipment;
– easy installation in all conditions;
– resistance to corrosive processes;
– not subject to shrinkage of the ground;
– Long service life – up to 80 years;
– repairability – if necessary, it is possible to replace part of the construction.
